I8/DF2ZC (JM89BC & JM87BX) 6. Oct. - 11. Oct. 2007

Story

From 3 October to 14 October 2007 my family and I spent a vacation in the Southernmost part of Italy, Calabria. Very much to the dislike of xyl and children I took some ham radio gear with me - to make some 2m meteorscatter activity from our rented holiday cottage in Amantea JM89BC (same as in 2004) and also for some hours of dxpedition activity from a spot near Brancaleone Superiore, in the very rare grid JM87BX.

When we arrived in Amantea on 3 October after 19 hours non-stop travel by car I decided not to set up equipment yet as I had planned the transfer to JM87 for Sunday 7th. However, wx forecasts spoke of thunderstorms on Sunday so I brought the JM87 event forward to Saturday. Around 3.30 am local time I left our cottage and traveled the some 250 km down to Brancaleone where it still was pitch dark when i arrived around 7 am local. However, with the help of car navigation system and handheld GPS receiver I found the way across the unpaved roads to the spot I was working from in 2004. Quick setup of 9 ele Tonna and portable mast, and at 0600Z I8/DF2ZC was operational, with about 100 watts out and a 80 Ah akku.
