Story

From 17 to 21 October 2008 Frank DH7FB and I were QRV from Icart, Guernsey, in IN94RK. Equipment was Kenwood TS 2000, Lienar Amp with 3CX800A7, 20m Coax Ecoflex10, MGF 1302 preamp and 2 x 9 ele M2 (15 dBd). The antennas were mounted on a horizontal crossboom so that we saved weight. On either side the final ends of the 3m boom consisted of about 1m fiber glass.

The entire setup was tested in DF2ZC's garden in September and worked perfectly. However, there is still a little room for improvement for the next activity.

We had chosen the Pastorelle holiday bungalow (www.lapastorelle.co.uk) which is directly at the South coast if the island and offers a spectacular view to the Saints Bay. Therefore Tropo takeoff was excellent from about 080 to 180 deg, from 050 to 080 it was still very good. All other directions were blocked by buildings.

On 15 October Frank DH7FB travelled from Berlin to my place and the very next morning at 0630 local we both left for a 900 km travel to Saint Malo in Western France, from where the ferry goes to the Channel Islands, where we arrived around 1600 local. After two hours waiting for the departure and another 3 hours ferry travel we finally arrived at the holiday bungalow at 8.30 pm local (Guernsey is 1 hour behind CET) where they were already being awaited by Clare, the owner. When we told Clare that she should not worry if we did strange things in the garden the next morning she directly replied with “Oh…are you radio hams?” Some 16 years ago a group had participated in the WWDX contest from her place so she knew what to expect. However, she might have benn somewhat disappointed because we did not put loads of wires in the trees but installed only two TV antenna like yagis in the small garden, looking south over the Saints Bay.

That was an excellent place for the antenna system, even blocked to the west by the bungalow which could have been helpful in case of high winds. Have a look at the Youtube video taken, showing the take-off to the East!

However, the weather was always excellent: warm and sunny. On the 17th the rig was quickly set up and then we waited for the moonrise to come. Every moon path we changed callsigns. The first moon path we made 94 initial QSOs, the second 43 initals and the third 7. All in all that were 35 DXCC entities via moon plus one via meteor scatter. Best results were with K0KP and OK1TEH who each run a single yagi and with ZL3TY with a 19100 km distance. Also at least one country first was established with UK/DL9LBH in Tashkent. And on 70 cm we easily contacted Dan HB9Q with some 65 watts at the dipole, antenna was a 19 ele F9FT. He was the only contact on that band.

We feel that the result could have been well above 160 initial QSOs as we missed some wellknown callsigns ans we noticed some stations that definitly do not have the GU DXCC preferred calling CQ instead of trying to work us. However, the 145 QSOs is more than we had expected and again, we are very happy that the setup we chose very well passed the test.

Should anyone plan to go to Guernsey with or without Ham Radio we strongly recommend La Pastorelle Holiday Bungalow. It is a perfect place for both...and we regret not having had more time to travel around since our main objective was ham radio related.

QSLs will be printed by 19 December 2008 and should be mailed by Christmas.

We prefer direct QSLs if you want to have your card soon. Via buro it might take much longer up to two years.

Direct QSLs with SASE or SAE plus 1 $ within EU, 2 $ outside EU for postage, please. Direct QSLs without sufficient return postage will be answered via buro only.

Of course, we are happy for any financial support as small as it might be but nothing is asked for and nothing is expected.
